Over 290 years ago at a place called Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff, a unique city began. Mobile, Alabama, now located at the head of Mobile Bay 27 miles south of the original site, still retains a uniqueness among the world's cities. Mother Nature's floods forced the city southward to it's present site in 1711, where Fort Conde was built as the cornerstone for the new city. Mobile is the only American city created by King Louis XIV of France. The city has since grown to a metropolitan area of over 400,000 people.
The walk route will take you through the city that originated Mardi Gras in America back in 1869. You will travel along paved streets that show you over 275 years of history. The Mobile area offers you the opportunity to visit with the founders of Mardi Gras, experience the excitement of the Civil War, visit the WWII Battleship USS Alabama, and see the cemetery where the crew of the Hunley, the world's first submarine, is buried.
Yes, Mobile is rich in historic homes, buildings and events. You may wish to take all day to hike this beautiful trail!
